Young homeless people are amongst the most vulnerable and poverty stricken in society.  Many have experienced long-term problems at home, leaving them without family support networks that most of us take for granted. The consequences of being homeless can be brutal, damaging clients resilience, self-esteem and self-confidence which  impacts upon their ability to learn or retain employment.

Doorway works across Warwickshire but the majority referrals are from Nuneaton which features nine areas in the 10% most deprived communities in the Government’s Index of Multiple Deprivation 2015.  One ward in Nuneaton falls within the top 2% nationally. Coming from deprived areas they have low aspirations and self-imposed barriers and living independently on a low income is challenging.

We help ensure vulnerable homeless young people can be found safe secure accommodation and prevent rough sleeping.  Once in stable accommodation, we help clients to develop their life skills and enable them to make a positive contribution to society either through education, volunteering or employment by empowering them to turn their lives around.

I would like to say how proud I am to have been part of such an amazing group. With amazing things. I spoke at the Odeon Cinema on behalf of the dance film we made and if it wasn’t for Doorway when I was 16 to help me I wouldn’t know what I would have done. I am happy in my life and am very successful. I am a senior carer for a care company. I love my job. Doorway gave me a voice and I use that voice to help others in need, so thank you

OTHER WAYS TO HELP

LEGACY GIVING

Have you ever thought of leaving money in your will for Doorway? Any gift no matter how big or small can help us to fulfil our ambitions for future generations of those we help.  https://www.doorway.org.uk/legacy-giving

There are lots other ways you can help.  We rely on donations of food and starter pack items.  Starter packs are given to each young person moving into their first independent accommodation.   Many new tenancies fail in the initial stages because of a lack of financial resources that provide the basic household items that turn a house into a home.  By providing these essentials, starter packs can help eliminate the ‘revolving door’ experience of many homeless young people.
